What Is A Poinsettia Plant And Where Does It Come From The poinsettia plant is a native of Mexico. It is named after Joel Roberts Poinsett, the first U.S. minister to Mexico, who introduced the plant to the United States in 1825. Poinsettias are members of the Euphorbiaceae family, which contains more than 300 genera and 7000 species of plants. The genus Euphorbia to which the poinsettia belongs, includes annuals, perennials, and woody shrubs found in tropical and subtropical regions throughout the world. The showy part of the poinsettia that we think of as the flower is actually a cluster of modified leaves called bracts. The true flowers of the poinsettia plant are small and yellow, and they grow in the center of the bracts. The Poinsettia is a short-day plant, meaning that it requires 12 hours or less of sunlight each day to bloom. This is why you often see them for sale in stores around the winter holidays when the days are shorter. https://youtu.be/svC0gwoK9Xo Subscribe to Gardening at 58 North on YouTube The Different Colors Of Poinsettias Just like any other flower, the color of a poinsettia says something about its personality.
