How Do They Make Different Color Poinsettias?

To get different colors of poinsettias, growers manipulate the light that the plants receive.

Poinsettias are short-day plants, which means they bloom when they experience long periods of darkness and short periods of light each day.

To make purple Poinsettias, Special dyes are sprayed onto the bracts while the plant is in its vegetative state. The dye is absorbed by the bracts and stays there as the plant blooms.

To make a pink poinsettia, growers use a similar method but with a white bract. They paint the tips of the bracts with a pink colorant. As the plant grows, the pink color will spread throughout the bract.

To make a red poinsettia, growers expose the plant to complete darkness for 14 hours each day for a total of 8 weeks. This lack of light causes the plant to produce more of a pigment called anthocyanin, which turns the bracts red.

While white poinsettias are the result of a genetic mutation, growers can also produce them artificially. They do this by keeping the plants in complete darkness for lots of hours each day, which prevents any color from developing in the bracts.

Now that you know how growers produce different colors of poinsettias, you can decide which color is your favorite.
