Ensuring your plant receives plenty of light is also important. With high light levels, plants pull more water from the soil, which helps it dry out faster and promotes healthier root function.

Many new plant owners turn to moisture meters or the “stick method” to gauge how much water their plant needs. The stick method is simple: Insert a wooden stake all the way to the bottom of the pot, leave it for a few seconds, and then check if the stick comes out dry or damp. A damp stick means the soil is still moist, while a dry stick indicates the soil is ready for watering. This method works well for many types of plants and gives a more accurate reading than simply checking the topsoil.

On the other hand, moisture meters are less reliable, especially when you’re using chunky soil mixes with ingredients like orchid bark or perlite. These materials reduce the soil’s contact with the meter’s prongs, leading to inaccurate readings. As the soil dries, it loses conductivity, which the meter uses to measure moisture. However, the airy, well-draining nature of a good soil mix can trick the meter into reading the soil as dry when it still holds adequate moisture.

What About Algae Growth?

While using glass containers has its advantages, one potential downside is algae growth on the soil’s surface. Algae is generally harmless, and in fact, it produces oxygen, which can be beneficial for the plant’s roots. However, it can look unsightly, and some growers prefer to avoid it. If you do decide to use a treatment like hydrogen peroxide to remove algae, keep in mind that it will also kill off all the bacteria in the soil—both good and bad.

Plant care is a balancing act of understanding moisture levels, providing enough oxygen to the roots, and monitoring for signs of overwatering.
